History of Beacon of Light
Beacon of Light is a non-profit charity organization established in 2001. Dr M H Millat, an eminent cardiothoracic surgeon founded the organization. Dr Millat worked in the UK and the Republic of Ireland over a decade. He is currently working as a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at the Square Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The organization works in the field of education, vocational training, healthcare support, poverty alleviation, conservation of environment and other related fields.
BOL built a junior school in a remote, flood-affected area of Sirajgonj district, where students are provided with books, uniforms and other educational materials free of charge. It is a non -fee paying school. The organization also established a computer-training centre in Sirajgoinj town; it provides vocational training and computer literacy to the unemployed young and students.
The organization helps poor meritorious students, especially female students of Sirajgonj district providing financial aid in the form of ‘Ansary Memorial Scholarship’ to continue their studies.
Beacon of Light also runs a clinic (10 bed hospital with out patients department) established by late Dr M S Ansary in Sirajgonj district. Dr Ansary brought the concept of modern health care system in rural Sirajgonj.
Dr Millat has taken a great initiative to plant one-lac trees under the banner of the foundation in Sirajgonj district. In the near future, there are aspirations to open a library, adult education centre and a vocational training centre.
